It took some getting used to, but I like it more than the egregious visual flattery most directors do.
I respect the simplicity and respect Zahler has for genre and film form. Updated my score from 2 and a half up to 3 stars. I think BICB99 is a very interesting film, i still have Bone Tomahawk pending to watch, what bothered me more on my first watch was mostly the pacing, but on a much more fresh rewatch, i got what Zahler wanted to show, specially with his way to portray our "hero" journey through his own Dante's Inferno.
However, i don't particularly enjoy this movie, sure, its a excellent crafted piece, the cinematography is amazing, the performances all delivered a potent component, but i think this film is hugely mismarketed, if i'm not wrong it was sold to me as a action film, and i don't think that's the accurate….
It brings me no joy to report that this is, in fact, pretty good. Unfortunate ideological underpinnings aside, Zahler knows what he's doing as a filmmaker - he may be a troll "provocateur" might be giving him a little too much credit , but he's a talented one, it would appear.
Bonus points for letting Udo Kier and Don Johnson really chew on the scenery. I'm impressed this manages to be so thoroughly and viscerally fucked-up that it even made me squirm.

The characters are great, the story is showcased well, and the choreography of fight scenes and the action set pieces are amazing! Vince Vaughn really shines here with probably his best performance of his career.
It was incredibly slow at first and even towards the middle and end it was slow, it only really started to speed up at the end when he finally started to beat everyone up, I believe the movie would be better if it wasn't so long and a lot of parts where cut out, the camouflages on the car was so bad, that didn't do anything, you could still see the car and we didn't need to see him drive 5 minutes to someones house only to then be instantly teleported to the prison.
