I never really liked the characters either. Chiaki was way too perverted and mean even for my taste, Fin was plain annoying, and Maron always seemed to me as a really stuck-up person at least in this case it turned out, that she wasn't.
The story itself was interesting, though I enjoyed some of the anime-originals better, then the manga-adaptations. The problems started around the second season of the show.
They raised a few questions that got me hooked but got disappointed at the end. When I first watched the final episode, I was like "What the I didn't like Fin's background story, it was too simple and The least they could have done was to give us a kiss or something.
The main problem was that they had the monster-of-the-day episodes for too long, and only got down to business in the last 4 or 3 episodes.
After watching KKJ some of my friends tried to get me to read the manga, saying, that it's way better, more complex, the characters emotions and background stories are more interesting, and more detailed, not to mention the end.
Of course at that time I didn't want to hear about KKJ ever again, but after half a year of convincing, I finally gave in and read the manga Maron became my favorite character, Chiaki one of my top favorite male characters and Fin one of my ultimate favorite female manga characters.
And yes, Tanemura Arina became my favorite mangaka. So it was worth it. After reading her comments on the anime I can somewhat understand why this show turned out the way it did.
This is a kids show. TOEI wanted to make a show that was understandable for kids. I still don't like this show and would have been happier with a better adaptation of the manga or a completely different storyline like in Full Moon wo Sagashite , but TOEI wanted to aim this show at a younger audience, and for them, this show was good enough.
I personally would recommend the manga rather then the anime, or watching the anime first, because after the manga, the anime would look really simple and weak.
Still, this series isn't a bad show. It's just nothing out of the ordinary. Like I once read in one of the many KKJ reviews, this series manages to stand out of the magical girl crowd for a moment, but only for a moment.
It has it's good points, I loved the music, even if it was average, the transformations were lovely. Even if her character and motive changed, Fin looked cool in the last few episodes, and the opening and ending videos were really well done.
I also liked some of the anime-originals, specially the one with Romeo and Juliet even if this episode was one of those which had really bad art.

Marron is not an idiot, she's also cool, not just Jeanne. And all the characters are good. Noin also.
It's not just an ordinary "Magical Girl" anime. It' something more, much more. The love between Marron and Chiaki. I don't know really why do I like this anime so much, but I think it is one of the bests.
It has a really interesting story, I mean Joan d'Arc is a historical character. I think the best characters are Noin and Sinbad, I don't know exactly why.
I suppose the anime is good because of the lifelike characters. If you didn't see it until now, then what are you waiting for?
Feb 05, Lesedelfin rated it it was ok. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. Natürlich gab es zuerst die Mangas, aber mir sind ein paar Veränderungen im Vergleich zur Serie aufgefallen, wo mir persönlich die Serienumsetzung besser gefallen hat.
Im Manga geht alles so Schlag auf Schlag und wird viel drastischer dargestellt. Alles muss ganz schnell erzählt werden und die Zeit für kleine Details und Feinheiten bleiben auf der Strecke.
Im vierten von insgesamt sieben Mangas muss Maron sich damit auseinandersetzen, dass ihr neuer Lehrer ihre Identität als Jeanne kennt.
Und Jeanne hat einen neuen mächtigen Feind, der den Keil zwischen Maron und Chiaki - der Sindbad verkörpert - noch weiter verstärkt. Was mich jedoch richtig gestört hat, war die Beziehung zwischen Maron und Chiaki.
Wenn sie Sindbad gegenüber stand, war es klar. Da dachte sie oft an Chiaki. Mit Chiaki kamen wiederrum kaum Dialoge zustande. Und trotzdem hätte ich mir dann deutlich mehr Gegeneinander vorgestellt, wenn man ihre beiden Positionen betrachtet.
Tanemura konnte mich mit diesem Part absolut nicht überzeugen. Ich finde, dasss hätte sie deutlicher machen können, denn ihre Zeichnungen sprechen eigentlich durch ihre stark warzunehmenden Gefühle Bände.
Wut, Trauer, Liebe - alles dabei. Die Striche sind sehr weich gezeichnet, aber mir waren in den einzelnden Handlungen einfach zu willkürliche Springer drin.
Chiaki's Ex-Verlobte z. Wenn ich nur die Zeichnungen bewerten müsste, würde es natürlich fünf Lesedelfine geben. Die Story selbst konnte mich aber wenig packen.

And even though pretty much every reader already saw it coming, that was a pretty cool twist on Claude Noin and Jeanne d'Arc! I kind of support that couple, even though I really do want Maron and Chiaki to end up together How could I forget?!!
I cried. I could feel the tears swelling up, but I can't really cry about anything for the past month or so. I kinda just laugh it all off.

I'm super glad they changed the rating on this volume, because volume four is not as childlike as its predecessors: Hijiri attempts to rape Maron after revealing himself as a suitor of the original Jeanne d'Arc; Chiaki checkmates a sick boy Zen-kun, who dies as a result of it; and Chiaki asks Maron out on a date so that they can talk about a secret that's bothering him.
I liked the twist that Zen-kun acted like a jerk at times; sick children are stereotypically portrayed as overly-nice, optimisti I'm super glad they changed the rating on this volume, because volume four is not as childlike as its predecessors: Hijiri attempts to rape Maron after revealing himself as a suitor of the original Jeanne d'Arc; Chiaki checkmates a sick boy Zen-kun, who dies as a result of it; and Chiaki asks Maron out on a date so that they can talk about a secret that's bothering him.

This volume is much darker and it helps the plot line hold interest. As always, the art is gorgeous. As explanation, he says that Maron is absolutely his Jeanne and that even if she has a different body, she should still belong to him.
