Mentre si appresta a lasciare la stanza, crede di vedere la figura della madre in un angolo e qualche giorno dopo il marito Steve riceve una telefonata da parte del cimitero nella quale viene informato della profanazione della tomba di Ellen.
Charlie ha un rapporto molto stretto con Ellen, tanto che uscendo di casa scalza vede tra gli alberi la nonna circondata da un cerchio di fuoco, come se stesse partecipando a un rituale ; Annie la trova e la obbliga a rientrare in casa.
Peter vede che la sorella non riesce a respirare e la mette subito in macchina per portarla all'ospedale, ma lei, in pieno shock anafilattico, si sporge dal finestrino per cercare di respirare meglio proprio mentre Peter, per evitare un animale morto sulla strada, sterza bruscamente e Charlie viene decapitata da un palo.
Annie accetta il suo aiuto e il giorno dopo la va a trovare a casa, dove con meraviglia scopre sulla soglia un tappetino uguale a quelli che sua madre era solita fare per i membri della famiglia.
Una volta risvegliatasi aveva subito gettato via i fiammiferi, ma i figli non credevano che la donna fosse sonnambula e soprattutto Peter da quel momento le aveva sempre rinfacciato il fatto di averli voluti uccidere, cosa che aveva definitivamente incrinato il loro rapporto.
Una volta a casa, Annie esegue il rituale e lo spirito di Charlie si manifesta con dei disegni sul suo album, dove rappresenta sempre il viso contorto del fratello.
Nel frattempo Peter, a scuola, vede la propria immagine contorta da un ghigno sul vetro di una libreria accanto a lui e si rompe il naso sbattendo violentemente la faccia contro il banco; la scuola chiama Steve che lo va a prendere e lo riporta a casa, dove con Annie lo mettono a letto.
Nel frattempo Peter si sveglia e su di lui aleggia lo spirito di Charlie. Nella soffitta Annie levita e si decapita con una corda del pianoforte, mentre delle persone nude rimangono ferme a guardare.
Inoltre sono presenti Joan, altri membri della congrega e i cadaveri senza testa della madre e della nonna, tutti prostrati ai piedi di Charlie.
