I watched this movie with some people who have never watched Star Trek before and they loved it. Proof that you don't have to be an old Star Trek fan or even a Sci-fi fan to get into this action packed movie.

Watching this on my 70" Vizio E series was quite the experence. Although this is clearly a "fake" 4k movie as most of the scenes appeared to be upscaled quality.

However this is fine with me as true 4k makes CGI look like garbage which would ruin this movie. It is the HDR effects that really shine on this formate.

The HDR lense flare really is quite gorgious and the panning space scenes look fantastic. This movie benafits hugely from the increased brightness range however the increased color accuracy did not appear to have much effect.

Colors looked realistic as you'd expect from a bluray, so not much change there. Mainly the massive brightness range from dark to bright scnes is where the benefits of the 4k version are aparent, atleast on my low end HDR TV.

I have been an avid Star Trek fan since I was a child. I grew up watching the original series on television, continued my addiction when the following series came out, and had seen all the previous movies.

And, of course, we all know how reboots have fared in the past. However, the writers and producers of this picture were extremely clever and intelligent in their approach, and, to my utter astonishment, I really enjoyed this immensely.

The film begins when a huge Romulan ship comes out of nowhere and completely destroys the USS Kelvin, with Jim Kirk's father aboard and sacrificing his life to give the rest of the crew, including his wife and newborn son, a chance to escape.

After a couple of small interludes concerning the childhood years of Kirk and the half-human Spock on their respective home worlds, the story picks up with the events that precede them becoming crewmates on the Enterprise.

We are presented with two very different characters in the embodiments of these two individuals. Kirk is a young hell-raiser who seems to delight in starting fights anywhere he can find them.

Spock is a conflicted personality who tries his best to be the unemotional Vulcan we all have known for years, but tends to burst into fits of anger whenever someone says anything derogatory about his mother, and who has an ongoing romance with the communications officer Uhura ok, that was unexpected.

These two diametrically opposed characters are thrown together to hunt down and stop the Romulan ship that has become responsible for the destruction of several worlds in the 20 years since it first appeared, and is now attacking the planet Vulcan.

All the regular characters make their appearances, including Christopher Pike, who was the captain of the Enterprise only in the original pilot of the first series.

The script writers produced a stroke of genius when they cast Leonard Nimoy as the original Spock called here Spock Prime , who comes back through time to introduce the fact that what we are seeing in this version is actually an alternate time line.

The Romulan ship coming through into the past triggered a change that reverberated down through the years, and so all the people in this are altered to a certain degree.

In this way, the changes in the personalities from what they were in the original adventures is not only explained, but very believable.

After this is brought to the attention, all pretenses and expectations go out the window, and the audience is entirely willing to accept these beloved characters just as they are presented here.

In addition, whether they knew it or not, the casting of Zachary Quinto as Spock was the most wonderful thing that the producers and director could have done.

Quinto's Spock is not only a character that one can fall completely in love with, but he also looks absolutely breathtaking in the Vulcan ears and makeup.

From one certified Star Trek geek to all the others out there, you have to see this movie. You will not be sorry. One person found this helpful.

I grew up with the TV show. It was interesting, entertaining and captivating. This movie was horrible. The sound track is so out of balance that I couldn't put down the remote to constantly increase and decrease volume.

The 2hr lame storyline is some guy is pissed at Spock and files around trying to kill him. The original short TV episodes were more accomplished than this 2hr disappointment.

Chris Pine is great as Kirk, but for me its Zachary Quinto who steals the movie with his portrayal of Spock, The excellent Karl Urban is not on the screen enough as MCcoy, and Simon Pegg is again not on the screen enough.

Its great to see the "original" Spock with the late great Leonard Nimoy in it too. Two spocks, not at all confusing. The only downside for me, was the plot was a little confusing with the time travelling Spock able to appear on the same screen as his younger self, this contradicts all known therio of paradox and time travel.
